If you work/associate with stray pets/animals at Petco or a local shelter what do I do if they have fleas?

If you work/associate with stray pets/animals at Petco or a local shelter what do I do if they have fleas? Will the fleas bite me and will the fleas go on my clothes and if it goes on my clothes will I take the fleas to my house and infect my house or cars with fleas, I also have a kitty at home.

I'm 14 btw doing project on it.If you work/associate with stray pets/animals at Petco or a local shelter what do I do if they have fleas?every place is different - I worked at a shelter and if we found fleas we would give the animal a FLEA BATH... and check with a comb for fleas - we would wash their sheets.. yes they can go home on your clothes but its rather unlikely unless your place is heavily infected.

fleas cannot live in a car for long without a host (a cat) to feed on... they cannot live on you either.. they can bite you but they are specific to cats or dogs....

also I want to add that some products for flea control have killed pets - flea collars are known to be risky and have killed petsIf you work/associate with stray pets/animals at Petco or a local shelter what do I do if they have fleas?
If there around 10 Pound and up Put Your Hand On the end of the back and spray some Flea And tick Spray BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO GET IT ON KITTY'S HEAD! Also ticks are nasty i used to live in the woods You have to burn them off with a ciggerate or they'll Leave a bad scared Don't Use the kind you buy at Walmart Either Buy the kind the VET likes for that stuffIf you work/associate with stray pets/animals at Petco or a local shelter what do I do if they have fleas? You can carry fleas on your clothes and they can go home on you and jump from you to your cats. Maybe bring a different set of clothes and change into them when you leave to prevent them from leaving the building. If you work/associate with stray pets/animals at Petco or a local shelter what do I do if they have fleas?
I work at a shelter and, so far, haven't brought any fleas home. But then again I do have a flea-ing program for my dog and cats.

We actually flea the strays when they are infested. The strays are kept in the pound area until the 8 days is over and they become out property. When handling the strays we wear protective gear. They then get vet checked and allowed in the cattery with the others waiting adoption

The reason for specific work clothes for working with strays is more for the spreading of disease than fleas.

As I also foster kittens, and work with the kittens at the shelter, I don't touch the adults - cos the babies havent been vacc'ed (too young) so I am doubley careful. If you work/associate with stray pets/animals at Petco or a local shelter what do I do if they have fleas?I volunteer at the SPCA and they told us during training to have a "volunteer outfit", and to either change clothes before leaving the SPCA (which is what I do), or take the clothes off before you go in the house. Some people have a shed, laundry or mud room to change in before their pets can get near the clothes. Not only does it keep the fleas out of the house, but strays and other animals may have other sicknesses that are contagious amoung pets.

There is an oral medication that can be given to animals to kill any existing fleas already on them. If a product such as Advantage or Frontline is applied to the animal's skin, the fleas (including eggs and larvae) will be gone within 24 hours. I am an Animal Control Officer, and normally at the shelter we can (and do) apply a little drop amount of Advantage to small animals if they are infested with fleas on impound and it hasn't harmed anyone yet. There are other methods commonly used to get rid of fleas, such as flea powder and flea baths. It is important to get rid of fleas on animals because small animals can become anemic as a result of blood loss, and any animal can develop Flea Allergy Dermatitis, which is a skin irritation associated with flea infestation.

I also recommend bringing an extra set of clothes if there is a chance of bringing home fleas, as well as making sure any pets at home are treated with anti-flea products. Fleas can and will bite you, and the bites can itch like crazy but the worst is usually over within a couple days. It is also possible for people to be allergic to flea bites. Hope this helps! If you work/associate with stray pets/animals at Petco or a local shelter what do I do if they have fleas?
I have picked up animals that were literally crawling alive with fleas, and have never had a problem bringing fleas home onto my pets. Of course it is possible, but not likely. If you or your mom is really worried about it, buy a spray bottle of Frontline, and mist your clothes with it before you go to volunteer. Same concept as mosquito repellent.
