Why do people ask questions about sick pets here?

Most answers involve people telling you to take your sick or dying animal to the vet, surely more pets would be alive today if it wasn't for Yahoo Answers?|||I was going to ask the same question before i saw yours, after shorty asked yet another dumb question about her dog (who operantly can't get up to eat / drink or anything ) and i think its cause people are CHEAP. if a person has a brain they will take their pet to the vet a few days after they get them for general check up/ vaccinations which means that you establish a relationship with your vet. if you have a dog, you should have established a relationship with a vet, they should know you and your dog and if you ever have questions you should be able to just call them up.

***Edit***

makes me wonder how all those people who are having a hard time making ends meet have a computer and an internet connection. thats 20 bucks a month right there for internet connection alone, guess how much dog insurance is a month? yep 20 bucks!|||Because taking them straight to the vet would just be too sensible.|||Your Avatar name suits you|||it is perfectly feasible to take a sick animal to the vets just as to take a sick child to the doctors.

sometimes people on here have had the same problem with their pets and can help. i think most animal lovers who take the time to ask questions and answer them are good people|||You have spelt your name wrong.|||Probably because going to the vet means spending a lot of money. But, if you love your pet, how would money come between you and a few more years with your best friend.

I had my cat for 19 years. I'd spend as much money as needed if it'd give me another day with him.|||Ask yourself that question and maybe you will succeed in answering your question yourself.|||It's the same in lots of other categories for example - the ones that wind me up are -

I have missed my period after having unprotected sex - could I be pregnant? Answer - go buy a test!

I have just found out my boyfriend/girlfriend has been shagging around for the past year - what should I do? Answer - dump them!

I've been feeling really ill lately and have grotesque boils all over my face - what should I do? Answer - Go to the Doctor?|||Think you should go to the vets and do us all a favour.|||Most people come on here asking what to do about their sick pets because they want a 'natural' way to heal their pet. The only thing is, when they say 'natural,' they really mean a free or cheap way to deal with it, natural just sounds more caring than cheap or free. Too many people out there want pets, but unfortunately don't have the finances to properly care for their pet(s). Personally, those questions really irritate me. It's one thing if they're asking about a runny nose, but when they mention their pet is vomitting non-stop, bleeding, or any other serious problem, then they need to be on the phone with their vet, not on here asking what to do. And I'm tired of people saying, 'Well, it's too late or it's Sunday, my vet isn't in now.' I have the name and number of my nearest animal hospital that is open 24/7 for emergencies. If my vet isn't in and I'm having an emergency, I'm taking my pets to that hospital. It might cost me a h*ll of a lot more, but that's just part of being a responsible pet owner. If people aren't willing to dish out the money necessary to help their pet(s), then they shouldn't have them!

EDIT: Tammy - When someone asks about their sick pet, I don't belittle them and I tell them what I think could be wrong, and then I usually finish by telling them to take it to a vet. Even if everyone on here is as sweet as pie and gives the greatest advice, it still will never equal what a vet can do. We can be nice and give advice. We cannot, however, heal broken bones, perform surgery, or prescribe any meds that might be needed. That REQUIRES a vet. Being nice and giving advice is great, but what good is that doing the animal in need of professional help? An owner is online looking for the natural, free, or cheap way to cure it's pet, while in the meantime this poor, helpless animal is curled up in a corner suffering because it's not getting the proper attention. That's called neglect and it's also ILLEGAL. As for money, I'm not rich, not even close. But if I ever notice something seriously wrong with one of my pets, I'm sure as h*ll going to be doing everything I can and SHOULD be doing to save it or at least make it more comfortable, and that means getting it to a vet to be properly diagnosed and treated. I don't care if I have to go a week without food, run up a credit card, take out a loan, whatever. Most vets are even willing to work out a payment plan. Animals are like children, they're helpless and they need a responsible adult to care for them and do for them what they can't do for themselves. If you have a sick child, but don't get it to a doctor and it dies, do you think anyone's going to say, 'Oh, it's ok, you didn't have the money at the time, so don't worry about it. You went online and looked for some help, it didn't work, but at least you tried.' I know it's not exactly the same thing and humans should be put before animals, but when you think about, an animal is just like a child - they're helpless and unable to do a lot of things. They can't tell you everything that is wrong and we can't always tell what all is wrong. They NEED a professional's help.

Now, when a child comes on here asking for help and their parents won't help them, that's different and I sympathize with them. But when it's an adult and they just don't want to spend the money on the animal, then they should NOT have them to begin with. THAT is ridiculous, it's neglect, and it's ILLEGAL! Those people should be happy someone on here isn't reporting them. And I'm sorry to attack you, I'm really trying to be as nice as possible, but this is one issue that always gets my blood boiling. Two things I care most about in this world are children and animals and there's TOO MANY people out there that have one or both and should really have neither. I'm sorry again. I see your point and I understand your side, but I hope that you also see my side and realize that sometimes what we say (negative or positive) to people just isn't enough and does the animal absolutely no good.|||I ask myself that question every day. Any responsible pet owner would not waste time asking questions concerning a living being, and prolonging its suffering, but would be dashing straight round to the vet.|||Pet owners especially novice owners will panic when something happens to their pet, and ask somebodys advice. They aren't sure whether it is worth the pet going to the vet ie for a small cut. But they aren't sure how to administer animal first aid.

Therefore all the people who take their time to help one another is a valuable service to other owners, and fair do's a lot of the time we do advice the owner to take their pet to the vet, but the owner needs that gentle push and reassurance first.|||More animals would be alive today if it wasn't for Yahoo Answers????

What the heck is that supposed to mean?

Yes, most people will answer and suggest to take your pet to the vet and I will almost always suggest that since proper treatment of a pet involves a correct and timely diagnosis. It is virtually impossible to diagnose any animal without actually being able to see and examine it. And it should never ever be attempted by a lay person.

People want a quick fix, preferably free or cheap, that's why they come here. It drives me crazy, but I try to help.

And the excuse given by lots of them that suddenly fell on hard times and cannot afford the vet for that reason......well, I bought it a time or two, but I refuse to believe it pertains to every single one of these pet owners.|||Wouldn't it be a perfect world if everyone who owned a pet was financially stable, had a nice five figure bank account and could afford any illness that a pet could potentially have without hesitation? It would be nice but it certainly isn't reality.

Perhaps some of you haven't noticed but milk is almost five bucks a gallon and the price of a gallon of gas for some people in this country is a hardship. Most people who have difficulty affording medical costs for pets are also having trouble making ends meet and keeping a roof over their heads right now. LIGHTEN UP. Do you honestly believe that most of them intended to get an animal and watch it suffer??

These people come to us for help. It is not our place to judge them as we do not know their circumstances. When each and every one of us click that "answer" button we're supposed to be doing so for the right reasons and to assist, not to criticize and belittle someone who possibly had a job last week and a good income and now doesn't have that security anymore. And when they contemplate giving the animal up, we criticize them for that too??

Maybe they come here out of ignorance. Then it's OUR responsibility to teach them the right way if we are truly trying to provide an answer. They ARE asking, that's a start, and what we do by kicking them is to show them that they are better off to keep their mouths shut and allow the animal to suffer rather than be humiliated.

Those that are young, we are teaching them to be distrustful of strangers and not to seek help because strangers are cruel and hateful.

Education is the key. Here, we have the opportunity to provide support, to guide their choices and to form better relationships between those who DON'T KNOW and their pets.

People who are asking what to do WANT to do something. Have any one of us never been confronted with having limited resources?

One of those people who were ridiculed unmercifully was a 12 year old boy. He'd found a baby squirrel and he wanted desperately to keep it alive. His Mom told him to try Yahoo Answers. We didn't know his circumstances totally. His mother was going to give it to the cat. His father was going to put it in the trash can. He said he wanted to call a rehabber as he'd been told on Yahoo initially. His mother refused to allow this because she said they would be arrested and have to undergo rabies testing. This kid was stuck, literally. Where does a 12 year old get money for formula and medication for a "nuisance" animal when Mommy and Daddy forbid it? The things people said, not knowing that this was a child and a child on a mission and with a purpose..it was heart breaking. This may all seem like a bunch of bullsh*t to some of you but people really do come here for answers and they DO take what is said seriously.

After much conversation with this lil boy, his Mom AND his Dad, a mutual understanding was reached and he was allowed to keep his squirrel UNTIL a rehabber could get there to take his squirrel. Three days ago I got a picture from the rehabber. Grubber was released three days ago. This 12 year old kid saved his first life.....thanks to the people here who offered their help. This boy could wind up a Vet one day because of this one experience. You NEVER know what effect the words you choose will have.

Please people.. I beg you, please be kind to one another for the sake of these animals. There is a surplus of animals out here improperly cared for and if we can educate instead of condemn, we have the power to change that....one pet and one owner at a time.|||Probably because going to the vet means spending a lot of money. But, if you love your pet, how would money come between you and a few more years with your best friend.
