When talking about alternate pets, why are small mammals only rarely considered?

I noticed that whenever I mention to the average Joe that I have pets other than dogs or cats, they usually assume that I have birds, reptiles or fish. But rarely, if ever, assume small mammals such as hamsters, gerbils, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc. Why the total non-interest in small mammals? When talking about alternate pets, why are small mammals only rarely considered?because they dont show emotion or affection, and arent as cool as birds or reptiles (theyre just awesome) or fish (theyre more of a decoration)When talking about alternate pets, why are small mammals only rarely considered? How do I delete this question? The only answer is by someone who obviously never owned any rodent, rabbit, or ferret.
