Why do people think it is OK to keep wild animals as pets?

Its illegal to keep animals from your backyard and keep them as "pets" unless you have a special permit. You could be fined up to $1,000 for keeping them. Not kidding. I don't get why people go out of their way to "rescue" wildlife, especially when it is in a normal phase of development. I can't tell you how many people "rescue" baby bunnies, or fledgling birds, and then call and ask how to care for them. I don't think it is done with malicious intent. I truly think that most people want to help, just aren't aware of the way that most wildlife cares for it's young.

What really ticks me off are the people who call and ask what to do with these creatures, and then get truly nasty when you tell them to replace the bunny or fledgling in the area that they found it. They accuse you of not caring, or of just wanting to kill it. It is not the ignorance of wildlife habits that bothers me. I am ignorant of a lot of things too. It is the "know-it-all" attitude of some people because they think that they can care for an animal better than nature.



Update - the actual wildlife rehabilitators need to have their homes/yards/etc. inspected to make sure that they are safe and proper for the care of wild animals. They don't just get to throw up a bunch of cages and then start filling them with wildlife. I think it is more the philosophy of the rehab places that is important. They make sure that any animal that they release is going to be able to return to 100% function in their natural habitat. Most everyday people that help wildlife do not necessarily have that same thought. They treat them more like pets, and view that life is more imporant no matter how it is lived. But in the wild, there is no protection for the weak and unhealthy. It sounds mean, but it is true. Most of the good people who try to save wildlife find that too harsh. I raise orphan wildlife all the time. If it is native to my area, it is free to go as soon as it can feed itself. Some stay longer than others. Do I keep "wild animals" as pets? No, and I don't recommend it for others either. But it can also be a good thing. I foster my kids love of nature through the animals we have "visit" us. Many great scientist of today would probably be factory workers if it hadn't been for an encounter with a wild animal! I agree with u and it is so DANGEROUS! I would not want to be living next to someone that had a Bear or cheetah or tiger in their backyard. I do not understand the need to have wild animals unless u are a animal trainer for movies or u are in a circus! actually i think it is ok for wild animals to be kept because most people are trying to help. unless it's an endangered animal. there are many animal rescues around here that are kept by normal people in their backyards. like i said, some people are just trying to help. which that is ok as long as they have the money and supplies to properly take care of the animals that they have.
