Can german shepherd be trained to get along with other pets?

i read a book that said an obedient dog will think of other pets (like parakeet) as family and will not harm it.

in animal planet funniest animals, there's lots of videos about the relations of german shepherd with other little pets getting along and playing.



is this true? if so how do you train them to tolerate? any website?

The key is bringing them up around these other animals, so if you're getting a GSD get a puppy so it grows up around the other animals you want them to tolerate.



Slow introductions with an already grown dog also might work, but I wouldn't trust it as resolutely. Not to mention that the personality of the dog strongly effects how it treats and interacts with other species.Can german shepherd be trained to get along with other pets?
Generally you can get most dogs to tolerate and get on with other pets if raised with them and they are taught how to behave around them.

Though there are some breeds which can't be left alone or go near other animals.



My friend has a GSD and was raised with cats and they get along fine, more so that the cats dislike the dog more. He couldn't care less about the cats in the house.

if he's not like that, and you know that he's lovable and friendly when he SEES other dogs, then its most likely you could train him..

i have 2, and they didn't have to be trained, they got along with other pets just fine.
I have a couple of males that will NEVER tolerate another male. 95% of my dogs (GSD's) go to homes that already have other pets.....so, yes, no problem.Can german shepherd be trained to get along with other pets?
A german shepard is one of the smartest dogs ever!! This is why they are used so much for "helper" work. Don't get a german unless you want a smart dog to train you!!
