Due to the economic crisis a huge quantity of pets are being left behind when their owners move. The animal advisory counsel has asked us to come up with suggestions NOT INVOLVING EUTHANASIA to deal with the overload of abandoned animals in our area. If you have any suggestions, any at all, please feel free to answer. I will be giving credit to screen names on the suggestion forms I am sending in, unless you state that you would prefer I didn't.A lot of people are abandoning their animals in my area when they move. How can we save the pets? You could host a pet adoption telethon on the local tv station. I've seen it done in my area plenty of times. If no one is willing to adopt, then unfortunately your options are limited. These animals will be likely to remain at a shelter until their time is up and they are put to rest.A lot of people are abandoning their animals in my area when they move. How can we save the pets?try having an adopt-a-pet day, get together all the animals and have them up for adoption out in the open not in the shelter where no one will see them. for the ones who dont get adopted just call ASPCA, they should come to get the animals out of your handsA lot of people are abandoning their animals in my area when they move. How can we save the pets?Do you have any no-kill shelters in your area, or in a nearby town that you wouldn't mind driving the animals to? If you can take in any of the animals, you can also try finding them homes on Craigs List (note: DO NOT GIVE THEM AWAY FOR FREE! God knows who you're giving that animal to, or if they can even afford the upkeep if they can't afford something like a $15-25 fee for a healthy animal.) I do not, however, think Craigs List is a good place to find homes- but if it's your last option, well, never look a gift horse in the mouth.
Do you have a local vet? At ours, there's a billboard where you can put up a picture of the animal you are trying to find/sell/give away etc. That's also something you could look into, and ask if they've had anyone call and ask if anyone has puppies/kittens/etc that they're trying to get rid of. I work at our vet, and we get calls sometimes like that- I found 3 of 5 kittens homes, that I found abandoned on the highway, this way.
Good luck! And never underestimate word of mouth. Just tell someone that you're trying to find some animals homes- maybe they'll stumble upon someone who is looking for an animal!
