Can you travel with pets when flying on a buddy pass?

I will be flying Delta on a buddy pass, and I need to take my two 5lb dogs. I called Delta the other day, and they said that only 2 pets are allowed per flight (not per person), so it would need to be booked in advance. But flying on a buddy pass, and flying standby, I would not be "booking" anything. They told me to contact the employee providing the buddy pass to get details. You might be in a situation where there is a seat for you but they already have their quota of animals on the plane. I would not recommend you even try.
