The only problem with Pets at Home is that it's a chain store and the staff don't seem to have much training. Let me explain.
I had been in and bought two books on fish keeping for both coldwater and tropical fish. I read these with enthusiasm as I'm new to fishkeeping. I went in a week or so later to get some advice. I asked an employee a question and she said she didn't know so she got a supervisor who also sounded a bit iffy with his advice, a tad unsure. I didn't feel too confident by their responses but reassurance came frmo the books which have been really useful. It sort of proves that they're not taught much about how to keep fish.
I went back yesterday just to have a look round and to buy some food. I had a look in a tank with 4 or 5 platties. There were the remains of a small dead fish in the tank, 2 or 3 of them were tussling over the skeleton! The substrate in the tank didn't look like it'd been cleaned as there was debris such as faeces, dead plant in amongst it. And nearly every tank I looked in, had the presence of snails - which not kept an eye on, can become a real nuissance.
They also had what looked like a pirahna in a 拢350 tank, a big tank but the water was extremely dirty, brown cloudy colour. I'm not sure if this type of fish like such conditions so can't really comment further. One batch of tanks did have a notice on saying that some fish were not for sale as they were being 'treated'.
I still use Pets at Home for food and tank maintenance items and would look closely and carefully at the fish in the tanks prior to purchase.Have you had a gold fish from pets at home and 3 days later you find its dead?
no it hasn't, but possibly you may have overfed the fish?, as over feeding causes them to have a shorter lifespanHave you had a gold fish from pets at home and 3 days later you find its dead? Most of the fish I get from Pets at Home have a disease of some kind. The last fish I bought, a Moor for 拢19.99, had parasites on it! I was able to deal with those successfully, and the fish I got from them before that one had White Spot, which I was also able to treat. It's always a good idea to add an Anti-white spot treatment to your aquarium as a precaution anyway, and I would recommend it for future purchases.
Contact Pets at Home and ask them what their procedure is for fish that die soon after purchase. I think they'll test your aquarium water for you if you take a sample to them and they'll determine whether or not it's your fault.
Edit: Someone has mentioned waiting for chlorine to get out of water, but that's quickly solved with a dechlorinater bought from a pet shop. Tap water is toxic to fish, never use pure untreated tap water in an aquarium.Have you had a gold fish from pets at home and 3 days later you find its dead?
i had 3 goldfish from walmart, and 2 of them died within a week. the other one has been alive now for 3 months and growing fatter! fish are very difficult to keep alive.Have you had a gold fish from pets at home and 3 days later you find its dead?hahah omg yes this has happened... I bought them at a pet store.. mine only lasted 24 hrs.. so your LUCKY!
its your water... ph neutral... and you have to let your tank settle... 3 or 4 days..
tap water has lots of additives...Have you had a gold fish from pets at home and 3 days later you find its dead?
yer we got two a few year ago from pets at home and within a few days they were dead!...i think its got something to do with the plastic bags they are in to transport them home.
My daughter killed our fish when she was 2, because she fed them rice crispies, poked them with a paint brush and drank some of their water..
She hasn't much luck with pets since.. I'm thinking of getting her a stick on a leash..Have you had a gold fish from pets at home and 3 days later you find its dead?
pets at home are rubbish for fish. i used to work in the aquatic trade anbd now am doing a xcourse for it so dont go there its a waste of money try another local shop they will usually be better cz they no wot they r doing unlyk the people at pet cemetary
Yep. Fish dont really like being carried about in small bags.. on the other hand, I bought a shubinken in Oct2001 (like a goldfish) and its still alive today.
At Pets at home all unhealthy pets are treated and only healthy pets sold- so if you chose your two fish and got them in your tank- chances are you didnt follow the instructions given clearly on the bag or the water change from PAH to your tank was too much for them which can also cause diseases.
I have had this problem once- but that was the water quality in my tank that caused it.
I know that pets at home are great, because when they first opened as pet city, i bought a 99p goldfish and 8 years later it just died the other day.
As with regards to the other answers so far- i am disgusted at the comments left aboiut the staff. Staff go through 4 steps of training and they get basic livestock training in their induction and go on to more detailed. Remember- theres many other animals there too- if you are unsure about the advice you arew being given ask the manager they are all trained extensively on this. I dont know which stores you have been in- but every single one i have its been a great experience so maybe its just the area.
If you want to help your tank and prevent this from happening again just follow these instructions:
-Make sure your tank is clean and offers fresh plants and aerated water (plants do this too!)
-The day before you want to get the fish put some dechlorinator or "Stress Coat" treatments in your tank and also if you have some "Anti bacteria" products use these aswell
-When you go to get your fish- take a small sample of your tank water with you so the staff there can do a test for you- then if there is something harmful or dangerous in your tank, they can tell you and advise you on how to sort it out.
-If you notice any ill or dead fish in the tank at the store- let a staff member know, and if they havent already done so- they will take the whole tank away from sale for treatment
-Once you get the fish home, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE BAG! these help ALOT in keeping your fish lhealthy and happy- and too many people just dump the whole bag of water into the tank and think nothing of it.
That should help for a start!
Pets at home can really help with this sorta stuff- and you'll notice the same problems in every pet store because you can't avoid it!
bear in mind too that Pets at Home check HOURLY every day for the fish- if they see ANY ill fish they will take the whole tank off sale and the same applies to dead fish- so dont be put off by that!
If you need any more help or advise go straight into your regular store and the staff will be happy to help, and with regards to letting fish acclimatise in the tanks there- they go off sale completely for a whole day (usually wednesdays) and NONE are sold so there goes that out of the window!
hope that helps
Yes that has also happened to me - to avoid this, go to smaller specialist shops, not chain superstores like pets at home. The smaller shops offer more advice and more rare and unusual fish as well as the more common types. There are online directories for aquatic shops in your area so have a look there. Good luck
Yes. It happened when I was a new. Food was 1 factor... overfeeding them polluted the water and H2O became infected. 2. They died in the presence of not so friendly type of fish and ate parts of the goldy's: weakening them until they died. 3. Just like all animals, hygiene, environment (air) food, medication and the right kind of water (not salt H2O on you know what...) (temperature too)........ good luck.
pets at home tanks are always picking up infections! i think this is because their staff are ex macdonalds workers?
best place to buy your fish is dobbies garden center at the aquatics section!!! ive bot fish from a few centers and not lost one!! all the best with your next one.
i bought 2 golfish and then 3 hours later i came back and found them dead...itz becuz of the water we should have waited about 4 hourz so the clorine would get out.
that does not suprise me at all. i have been constanly complaining about when i went there and one of the staff said oh look a dead i know i will just bury it in the gravel. the staff member says that she was refering to a plastic plant. so they are liers and don't give a stuff for the animals
well lets see did you keep it in a bowl didit have a filter and did you keep it in direct sunlight if you answered yes to any or all of these q's then you are a horrible fish parent come see us next time you want to kill a 5000 dollar scarlet macaw
I would never buy fish from Pets at Home, In our local store the tanks are a disgrace with Whitespot and Fungus and god knows what else. Went in the other day to buy some filter media and the assistant was removing dead fish from the tanks with same net in every tank.
Just walked out in disgust.
Get your fish from a dealer who only sells fish they will be a lot more healthy and cared for.
I have bought several recently, did everything they said I was supposed to, and all dead!
Well, this is where the saying, "you get what you pay for," would apply. And this is why we always, always encourage people to only ever buy fish from reputable, local fish stores ("LFS"). People who work in these store are much more knowledgeable and will give much better advice and, as they are much more knowledgeable, know how to choose the fish they sell for health and good breeding qualities and know the reputable breeders and distributors. Be as choosy with your LFS as you would your own doctor. If you are discerning in this regard, you will have much better success with your fish. That said, it is not all the seller's fault. You have your own responsibilities to provide a healthy water environment for your fish and to understand what that entails. There are aquarists who devote their lives to rescuing sick fish from bad fish stores and nursing them back to health. They can do this because they understand how to provide a healthy home for these fish and how to treat disease. So, while it is never a happy moment to discover you bought a sick fish, it is often very possible to bring that fish back to health at home.
I bought 2 from there and they died very quickly. But 3rd time lucky, this one's a fighter!
They don't like the trip home in the bag, this is quite traumatic for them.
when buying a goldfish and preparing the tank, the water needs to be left to stand for at least 24 hours [but no more than 36] to allow it to become the temperature of the room. please do this otherwise goldfish can go into shock if placed into extremely cold/hot water.
I bought a dwarf gourami from their and it died in three days, someone told me not to go there from previous experience but i forgot the name. I was told they put the fish up for sale before letting them climatise so they were that stressed they just died, maidenhead aquatics is the best store i find very helpful and honest.
my daughter has had 2 fish from pets at home and both have lived for at least 2 years!
Yes that has happened to me, I won't buy from there anymore. their fish do come with a 7 day guarantee though so.... you could take them back and get a refund!!!
Yup - I had mine a week - damn it
Yes, loads of times~ although once I had a beta fish from Petsmart that lived for 6 years!
