My 7year god daughter has one and she takes great care of him. He even swims up to her when she comes up to the tank and will beg for food (dont fall into that though as they are easy to over feed)



Just dont fall into the trap that they tell you in the store about them only needing a small cup and that they come from mud puddles... thats not true.. they come from the rice paddies in China which are THOUSANDS of miles across.



You will need a minimum of 2.5 gallon tank (I recomend a 5 gallon, this way you will not have to do full water changes, just 30% once a week with a gravel syphon... with the 2.5 gallon you will have to take the betta out of the tank and clean out ALL of the water... very stressful for the fish and more work for your 12yr old)



They are tropical fish and will need a heater, they like there water at 78-82 degrees, unless you live someplace warm where the water would stay that warm on its own... like Miami.



Betta's done like strong currents so i would recomend a sponge filter. Also with the 5 gallon tank, if you kid does a great job you would have room for another friend in there, such as an African Dwarf Frog... Betta's are not as mean as people make them out to be.



Dont forget water conditoner, and betta food (they are carnivors, so make sure you get one suited for there needs... mine loves Freeze dried blood worms as a treat. - not as gross as they sound, they look like tiny sticks)



Also get SILK plants, they like to rest on them... Plastic plants can have sharp edges and they can catch their tails on them and tare them. (same with decorations, Sand down any rough edges)

A siamese fighting fish requires a minimum 2.5 gallon tank, a heater and a light filter. As long as the child understands that the fish will need 1- 1.5 hours of maintenance each week and daily feeding and monitoring it should be fine.



Bettas are a much better choice that goldfish. Your child will learn about the nitrogen cycle, some basic chemistry through water testing and will learn responsibility.

This can even prove difficult with a male and female in the same tank. Trust me, I've tried it many times. The other thing is that they are not that active. I would suggest a someting more intersting for a reponsible kid would be a breed called "oscar." They come in two different varities, with albino fish occuring in both varities. Of cousre the albinos are a little harder to find, but not impossble. These fish can be bought at any pet store, and come in a variety of sizes. Retail pet stores usually sell them by size, small, medium, large. But independent pet stores usually have them even larger. (Think a medium sized salmon). They are the neatest because he can feed them live fish ("feeders"). The Beige/orange markings on their bodies turn into deeper oranges and reds when feeding. They also, overtime will get used to your child and even come close to the tank when he approaches. This happens within a week. It's like they get to know him. If they are, and the tank is set up and maintained correctly then it's not a problem.



If it's just YOU that thinks they want a betta, and buy them one in a bowl, it will be dead in 6 weeks.



Seriously, buy a decent fish tank, 10-20gal. You can keep a betta AND several other small fish in it. A large tank is actually easier to run than a tiny one.

Less care than many other pets though - oh and don't put more than one in the same tank or in view of each other - at least not until you're sure they won't fight!

Just remember to change the water and put stuff in every week or so and feed it enough. They're very interesting to watch.

Depends on the kid I suppose - the fighting fish are almost indestructable - they can live in just about any temp or condition.



He'll have better luck with them than a goldfish or other tropical fish - that require constant temperature - cleaned/filtered water with airiation.

there one of the best pets you coulsd have i own 151/2 because one is having a tumor. so sad he was my favorite his name was sora about 12 years old. he was abused and i rescued him. he was bought in florida so buy one youll love it better than a dog or cat.
To me they're really boring. Most kids don't want fish anyway (check to make sure). If the kid's really responsible, I recommend a hamster or some other small fuzzy animal.
they are good fish, but very finicky. They can't be over or underfed so make sure the kid studies up on them very hard. Most of all, DO NOT PUT 2 SIAMESE FISH TOGETHER.
Most definitely Siamese Fighting Fish are easy to look after (as long as you don't put two in the same bowl!) They're beautiful to look at too!
They are fine but boring get a hamster or something around 12 my parents let me get a dog and it is still alive.
good. just make sure u get a book first, since a lot of people lie about fish, especially bettas. some people say they are ok in those puny bowls!!!
